24K vs 21K: what should you actually buy?

Twenty-four karat is purer. Twenty-one karat is more familiar to the Egyptian market. Which one suits you depends on what you intend to do with it.

What the numbers mean

Karat measures how much of an alloy is gold, out of twenty-four parts. Twenty-four karat bullion is 999.9 fine, effectively pure. Twenty-one karat is 875 fine, meaning 87.5 per cent gold with the remainder in other metals. Eighteen karat is 750 fine.

Purity is not quality. A 21 karat coin is not defective; it simply holds less gold per gram, and it is priced accordingly. A gram of 21 karat is worth exactly 87.5 per cent of a gram of 24 karat, before any premium.

Where each one makes sense

Twenty-four karat bars are the cleaner instrument for holding value. Their purity is the international standard, their pricing is transparent, and a sealed bar with a certificate is straightforward to sell anywhere that deals in bullion.

Twenty-one karat has deep cultural standing in Egypt. It is the karat of the coins given at weddings and births, and it is what much of the local jewellery trade is built on. If you are buying to give, or buying for a household that expects coins, 21 karat is the natural choice.

The softness question

Pure gold is soft, which is why jewellery is rarely made at 24 karat. This matters far less for bullion, because a sealed bar is never worn or knocked about. It sits in its card.

If you plan to wear the piece, alloyed gold is the practical option. If you plan to store it, purity wins.

A simple way to decide

Ask what the piece is for. Storing wealth over years points to 24 karat bars in the largest size your budget allows. Gifting, marking an occasion, or holding something the family recognises points to 21 karat coins.

There is no wrong answer, and most households end up holding both.
